A little background
I’ve been a software developer for over 15 years and have always wanted to be a game developer. I’ve also always loved games made by Sid Meier and others. So I’m finally taking the plunge and making a game idea that I’ve thought about for quite some time.
Sid Meier’s Pirates is a huge inspiration for The Pirates of Sector 7. It won’t be a copy (duh! Sector 7 is not in the Caribbean) but it will take some game-play elements from it, and hopefully execute them well within an outer space environment.
So far, I’ve got a decent working prototype with some of the major elements of the game already in place. Here are some of the features Sector7 will have:
- Fly multiple ship types
- Engage in fast-paced ship-to-ship combat
- Manage a small crew with RPG-style skills
- Follow the main quest storyline
- Trade goods throughout the sector
- Join or fight against different factions
The biggest challenge for me is art! Yea, yea.. I know.. a common theme amongst singular indie developers. But I’m working at it and using some shared assets where I can (which will be credited and used appropriately per license if they make it into the final version). I’ll post some screenshots soon and you can be the judge.
The second challenge is time. I have put no time limit on the development of this game because I have a full-time job, a family and small children, and only limited hours available any given week. I will keep you updated on progress. The current goal is to finish the game this year, 2017.
